Water Cycling - Bye Bye ‘cycling butt’

The 'Hydrorider' in action

I recently discovered a story about ‘Water Cycling’, which combines water aerobics with cycling. I thought I might bear it mind for the day when my joints pack in, and I still fancy doing a spot of bike riding.

Its meant to be really good for ‘Bicycle Butt’ which, if you don’t already know, is when you get a pain in the backside from excessive cycling, or riding on a bike that your butt is not accustomed to. Anyway, enough butt talk already, back to the subject at hand…

Here are just a few of the benefits of Butt, I mean Water Cycling!

  1. It gives you a darn good cardio workout, as from the outset, its more strenuous than ‘land’ cycling.
  2. You don’t overheat, as you are being water cooled at all times.
  3. You don’t get Bike Butt.
  4. It takes a lot of the bumps and jolts out of riding a bike, and also you don’t have as much weight to support so its good for people with painful joints.

It involves using specially adapted bikes, called ‘Hydroriders’, which are fitted with paddles protruding from the wheels. You can control the resistance by extending the paddles.

You don’t actually submerse yourself fully, as I don’t think you would get too far without oxygen. What happens is that the riding height is adjusted so that the rider is in the pool at about chest height, and then the rider pedals away.

It works too, according to Dephana Holt, who’s been water cycling since summer:

“I love it,” she said. “I’ve lost weight. I’ve lost inches.”

So there you have it, sounds like another way of keeping fit and healthy involving some form of cycling. What next? Upside down cycling? Any ideas?
